I have asked this question of every person I met, even as I am searching for my own answers to this question. I received numerous responses and many that came with a look of fear or a blank stare and a very strong “Duh” moment following.
Being unemployed, some people are going back to school to finish degrees and others are pursuing additional degrees in cross-industry studies. Some are even pursuing doctorates, so they can become experts and highly respected in their industries. Some will become certified and licensed. Some will become teachers and some will study abroad.
I met a 23 year veteran from a highl respected media firm who had been laid off, and who was working part-time in a chain restaurant who went back to school to study nursing. He was too young to stop working or retire and so he chose a field that would allow him to finish his career in a strong profession where workers were needed.
In answer to this question, I decided that every time some aspect of my career made me feel like I should be further along, I would challenge myself to take a course in some sort of educational format.
My first class was How to Build a Website in a local Continuing Ed environment. The course was three hours long and cost $50.00. Now, it is unrealistic of me to expect to learn how to build a website in three hours. But since I already own a website created for me by a very talented web designer, I expect that I’ll learn some of the basics in this class, which might enable me to ask better questions of my designer. When I finished the class, I expect to be able to go back and look at my site to see how it to attract more visitor traffic. After all, the reason for taking the class in the first place is from a marketing standpoint.
I want to be able to share the statistics from the CWW Survey and I hope the Blog posts generate comments and feedback that helps CWW help others.
And that’s what you do for your career – make it work better by adding to your skill set, becoming certified in some aspect of your abilities, continue your education by learning about something you personally don’t know how to do.
You need to arm yourself with every advantage your can find to become better at doing what you do in your job, your career and in your life.
Inspiringly yours,
CWW Career-Wise Ways...!
