How to Create A Career Mission Statement (CMS)

Some would say there are several steps to creating a Career Mission Statement. At CWW, we believe that a CMS is key to continuing growth. Your CMS may start out as lacking definition. But as you work it, it gets cleaner and clearer.

A Career Mission Statement is useful to remind yourself of what you are setting out to do. A CMS will help you get clear about what you want and it will change as you define your long term work situation, which may be a career job or a career business. A CMS might just allow you to dream your wildest dream.

At times your CMS may not look the same as when you first created it and this can be based on some re-definition that has occurred in your life. There are basically three steps to the CMS, which is different than a BR√.

  • ¨       A CMS allows you to dream. It sums up:
  1. who you are
  2. what you desire, and
  3. your intention.

  • ¨       A BR√ speaks to your reality in the here and now. It also sums up:
  1. who you are, and
  2. what you desire. However, it requires,
  3. you to remind yourself of what you do not want

Sometimes a Career Mission Statement is not about writing a mission statement at all, but about creating a virtual concept of what you would like to dream for yourself. It is a vision of ideas and desires. Some key phrases used to creating your CMS can be:

  • ¨       I am…
  • ¨       I am passionate about…
  • ¨       I believe in…
  • ¨       I will…
  • ¨       I will be…
  • ¨       I will say…
  • ¨       I will thank…
  • ¨       I value…
  • ¨       I will be guided…
  • ¨       I am part of…
  • ¨       I hold myself…
  • ¨       I will strive…
  • ¨       In relationships, I…
  • ¨       I will give…
  • ¨       My purpose…
  • ¨       My mission…
  • ¨       I will seek…
  • ¨       I am committed…
